Time and Grime Walk Hand in Hand ii (b&w) (2013)

My friend Joseph from Dark Pines was wondering what the original ‘Time and Grime Walk Hand in Hand’ would look like in black and white so I gave it a try. I think the black and white draws more attention to the textures, but I prefer the colour version.

What I find fascinating is how the emotional tone shifts so dramatically seeing it as a monochrome. As Melinda points out, the colour “brings it to life”. This image is not lifeless, but it conveys a different view of life. Cracks, corrosion, and hard surfaces & edges predominate. Emotionally cooler and more distant , this environment demands your attention to detail .
The two images together demonstrates how colour & B&W photography are really two different media. Each constructs reality differently. They convey modified messages/information.

Thanks for taking up the request, Ashley. This was a thought provoking exercise in Media Literacy. 🙂

I’m with everyone else … the b&w does conjure a mood, pull out details and textures … but, the color version is more suited to this particular photo.
