Ahh… So sweet… I like spiders. They are as unashamed about their hunting as pussycats are but not so deceitful as to pretend to be friendly. (I like pussy cats too though, the evil conniving little devils). I used to keep pet spiders as a boy. They seemed to like me (perhaps because I brought flies to their little home in my room). I don’t like flies.

I woke with spiders, big ones while living in Israel many years ago. I don’t like them and don’t appreciate the memories being jogged.

I’ve been told that there are no poisonous spiders on Vancouver Island (and I’ve been told the opposite!). I have often removed spiders from the house by putting a long-handled wooden spoon next to them. Quite often, they obligingly climb onto the spoon and I can then deposit them outside, where hopefully they will eat aphids.

These ones won’t hurt you. You know, I’ve been here for over 40 years and I’m not sure if I’ve ever even seen a red back, a funnel web or a trapdoor spider. The only things that have bitten me are mosquitoes. I haven’t seen any snakes either but my sister and nephews have. I haven’t seen any koalas in the street either. Actually, when we came here, I didn’t expect to see any kangaroos bouncing down the road, but I did think I would see koalas sitting in the trees of suburbia.

I think it is fair to say that I am the kind of person that would step off the plane, and be immediately surrounded by every poisonous spider around. Of course, even the one in the photo, that won’t hurt you, is still too big. If a spider is bigger than the point of a needle, it’s too big. 🙂

Very early 60s cinema style atmosphere well done. 🙂

As a consequence of milder winters our spiders are surviving longer and as a consequence now have the opportunity to grow larger. It seems that some are producing a bite that can produce a burning rash. Thankfully the snow-wyrms are mostly imaginary. 😀
